Matthías Bergsson fæddist í Snæfellsnessýslu 30. nóvember, 1845. Dáinn í Selkirk í Manitoba 13. desember, 1930. Ókvæntur og barnlaus. Hann fór vestur til Winnipeg í Manitoba árið 1889 og mun hafa sest að í Selkirk.
