Sigrún Ingibjörg Gunnlaugsdóttir was born on May 5, 1892 at Jaðri in the Árnes settlement in New Iceland. She died in Los Angeles on February 4, 1963.

Sigrún’s parents were Gunnlaugur Helgason and Jíhanna Helga Sigurðardóttir who named their land Jaðri in the Árnes settlement. Hannes was the son of Jakob Líndal Hansson and Anna Hannesdóttir who came west in 1887-1888. Sigrún attended elementary school in New Iceland, began studying at Wesley College in Winnipeg in 1908, and then completed a BA from the University of Manitoba in 1914 and a teaching certificate from Manitoba Normal School a year later. She was a teacher in New Iceland and the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan from 1915-18. Sigrún and Hannes began farming in Winnipeg in 1918, but moved from there to California in 1948.
