Helgi was the son of Gunnar Helgason and Benedikta María Helgadóttir, who came west in 1887. Sigurrós was the daughter of Kristjón Finnsson and Þórunn Björg Eiríksdóttir in New Iceland. Helgi grew up in the Hnausa settlement on Lake Winnipeg and soon began fishing when he reached adulthood. He later also started farming.
