Jósef fór einsamall vestur um haf til Winnipeg í Manitoba árið 1889. Hann bjó þar í bæ allmörg ár en árið 1910 keypti hann hveitimyllu í Glenboro en rak hana ekki sjálfur. Missti hana í eldsvoða árið …
