Ólafía was the daughter of Jóhann Hjörtur Pálsson and Kristína Þorsteinsdóttir, early settlers in the Lundar settlement. She attended children’s and youth school in Lundar, then Jón Bjarnarson’s school in Winnipeg and finally the Manitoba Normal School in 1930-31. She became a teacher and taught in many places in Manitoba, but in 1938 she moved to Toronto and worked in an office at the city’s General Hospital.
