Guðmundína was the daughter of Sigurður Hafliðason and Þórunn Ólafsdóttir who came west in the first decade of the 20th century. They first settled in Manitoba, moved to Saskatchewan, but then moved west to Washington in 1913. Guðmundína studied at the Cornish Drama Music and Art School in Seattle and the Novikoff School of Ballet, also in Seattle.
