Sófónías Björnsson was born on November 6, 1879 in N. Þingeyjarsýsla. He died on February 20, 1931 in Seattle, Washington. He took the name Zophonias Johnson in the west.

Sófónías came west to Canada in 1886 with his parents, Björn Jónsson and Sigríður Emilía Halldórsdóttir of N. Þingeyjarsýsla. They settled in Calgary, Alberta. Sigurlaug was the daughter of Rafn Guðmundsson and Guðrún Þóroddsdóttir. Sófónías grew up in his parent’s home in Canada and was a printer. He fought in the Boer War in South Africa at the turn of the century, returned to his homeland in Alberta, but in 1906 moved west to the Pacific Ocean and settled in Seattle. He lived there ever after.
