Sigurbjörn was the son of Sófóníus Björnsson and Sigurlaug Rafnsdóttir in Seattle. He graduated from the University in Seattle with a degree in business administration in 1949, where he worked as a salesman and also ran his own grocery store. He was the president of the Icelandic Club of Greater Seattle in 1966-68.
