Sigurður’s parents were Sigurður Jónasson (Sturlaugsson in the west) and Helga Bjarnadóttir. He moved with them to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð). Rósa was the daughter of Tryggvi Jónsson and his second wife, Rósa I. Jónsdóttir, early settlers in Pembina, N. Dakota. Rósa grew up in Pembina, graduated from school there 1918 and from teacher’s college in 1921. She taught for a number of years before marriage. Sigurður was a barber.
