Jónas came west in 1890, together with his sister Guðrún and Jón Skúlason, her husband. He settled in Winnipeg and lived there after that. Guðrún came to the West in 1888 with her parents, Pétur Einarsson and Halla Magnúsdóttir, and siblings. She had a hard time in the West and move back to Iceland in 1904.
