Hólmfríður was the daughter of Ólaf Benediktsson of Húnavatnssýsla, who came west in 1874 with his parents, Benedikt Ólafsson and Hólmfríður Bjarnadóttir. They first settled in New Iceland in 1875 and later in N. Dakota in 1880. Hólmfríður Ólafsdóttir’s mother was Guðrún Guðmundsdóttir. Hólmfríður grew up in the home of Kristin Kristinsson and Sigurlaug Einara Guðmundsdóttir in Markerville. She moved from there to Calgary where she met her husband who was an engineer in the city.
