María Guðlaug Hannesdóttir was born in Gimli in New Iceland on August 8, 1919. She had the last name Christjanson in the west, and was later known as Mrs. Learned.

María was the daughter of Hannes Kristjánsson and Elín Þórdís Magnúsdóttir in Gimli in New Iceland. There, María completed her high school diploma and later a trade school diploma in Winnipeg. She was a secretary in the Treasury Department of the Government of Canada in Ottawa in the years 1940 – 43. Later she was a secretary at a life insurance company in Winnipeg. Her husband studied photography and worked in photography in Winnipeg. He was on the board of the Professional Photographers Association of Manitoba for many years.
