Jón was the son of Sveinn Kristjánsson and Veroníka Þorkelsdóttir, early settlers in New Iceland in 1883 and the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1905. Jón joined the Canadian Army and served 1916-1919. He repaired machines in Wynyard for a time, but then moved from there to Chicago.
