Björn Stefánsson

Hjalmur F. Danielson wrote the following on Björn Stefánsson, published in The Lundar Diamond Jubulee: ,,Bjorn Stefansson, L.L.B.,when one and a half years old came with his parents from Iceland, the late Stefan Björnsson and his wife Guðríður who settled at Mary Hill near Lundar. After completing matriculation at Wesley College he studied Law for three years and for financial reasons had to work part time. He graduated from Manitoba University in 1915. Durung the summer he took up military training at the Royal Officers Training School and enlisted in November in the 79th Batt, which he served as a Lieutenant until he was transferred to the Air Force. He operated a fighter plane in France. He was severely wounded in May 1918, but he managed to return to his own lines and make a safe landing. After spending almost two years in hospitals he became a member of the Law Firm of “Lindal, Buhr and Stefansson”. During twenty years with that firm he was active in politics and for a number of years was the President of the Conservative Association and a Conservative Candidate in North Centre Wpg., in 1940. Bjorn enlisted in July 1940 in the Canadian Army and was slated for duty in Iceland as a Captain, but in March 1941 he took charge of the ground training of the Special Corps of the Elementary Air Training School at Virden, Manitoba, until the end of the war. He is the Registrar of the Land Titles Office at Carman, Man., and is also a Police Magistrate and Deputy Judge of the Juvenile Court.”
