Sigríður grew up in Leirá in Bargarfjarðarsýsla, but at the age of six she went west across the ocean with her mother, Guðrún Magnúsdóttir. In VÆÆ I the following is written about Sigríður: “Sigríður lived with her mother at Leirá and went west with her across the sea at the age of 5. Was first in New Iceland for a year, but for the rest of the year in Winnipeg for schooling. After finishing middle school, she studied art painting with Mrs. Sutherland in Winnipeg and later with Miss Farren in Cambridge, England, but there she stayed with Mrs. Sigríður, the wife of the scholar Eiríkur Magnússon, her father’s sister, and there married Reverend Guðmundur, later a pastor in Winnipeg. Taught art painting both in Winnipeg and at Oak Point, Man., where she had a drawing school for teachers. Worked in the Good Templar lodge Hekla in Winnipeg, which her father had founded. President of the Union Women’s Association at Oak Point 1929-33, treasurer of the Women’s Association Eining at Lundar 1933-43. Vice-President of The Ladies Social Benefit Club, Oak Point, for many years, its secretary and treasurer. Worked as a nurse at Oak Point for 17 years, and taught sewing for young girls there for several years. Learned sewing in her younger years. Was for a time secretary and financial secretary of the Association of Liberal Women’s Associations and was elected an honorary member in 1943. Elected a life member of the General Alliance, Boston, 1947.”
