Jóhann Kristinn was the son of Hannes Erlendsson and Jóhanna Magnúsdóttir who came west in 1900 to Manitoba and settled in Big Point. They moved from there to Langruth in 1913. Thelma was the daughter of Bjarni Eyjólfsson from Laugarvatn and Guðný Jónsdóttir from Víðastaðir in Hjaltastaðaþinghá. Bjarni came west in 1910 and Guðný in 1913. They married in 1917 and lived their lives in Big Point. Jóhann moved in 1941 to Vancouver where he worked in shipbuilding until he retired due to age.
