Jón Þórður Þorsteinsson was born on August 29, 1905 in Reykjavík. He had the name Jón Thordur Bergman in the west. He died on April 14, 1983.

Jón was the son of Þorsteinn Guðmundsson and Þórunn Ólafsdóttir who came west after 1910 and settled in New Iceland. Rúney was the daughter of Jakob Andrésson from Hvassafell in Borgarfjörður and Kristín, his wife. Jakob’s mother, Kolfinna Oddsdóttir was the half-sister of Agnes, Þorsteinn’s mother. Jón’s mother died when he was 9 years old and he was taken in as a foster child. He grew up in Riverton, Manitoba and the Geysir settlement. Rúney grew up in Charleswood and Fairford, Manitoba but she and Jón Þórður lived a long time in Delta, British Columbia.
