Björn was the son of Þorlákur Björnsson and Hólmfríður Sigurðardóttir, early settlers in N. Dakota in 1883. They first took land near Mountain but later bought land in the Akra settlement. Björn grew up there, took over the land after 1916 and lived there until 1944, then moved to Cavalier. Björn contributed to the Icelandic society, was in the local council, sat on the school board and on the board of the Vídalín church.
