Helga was the daughter of Gunnar Björnsson, newspaper editor in Minneota, and Ingibjörg Ágústína Jónsdóttir. She moved with them to Minneapolis in 1925 and attended school there and graduated from Central High School in St. Paul in 1929. She studied library science at the University of Minnesota and completed a BA degree in 1933. She was a librarian at the public library in Minneapolis in the years 1933-42. Then she worked in the years 1942-43 at the Library of Congress in Washington DC, when her husband served in the military. Helga was always interested in the life of Icelanders in the West and actively participated in their organizations in Minnesota.
