John Sigurjón Christopherson was born in Manitoba on September 15, 1884.

John was the son of Hernit Kristófersson and Þóra Sigurðardóttir, his first wife, who came west from S. Þingeyjarsýsla in 1883. They settled in the Argyle settlement in Manitoba where John attended grade school and then enrolled at Wesley College in Winnipeg. He studied law, graduated from the Law Society of Manitoba in 1914, and practiced as a lawyer from 1915.
