Jón came west in 1883 to Winnipeg but Guðrún was studying cooking in Copenhagen. She came west in 1889 to Jón in Hensel, where his parents, Guðmundur Gíslason and Sigríður Símonardóttir, lived. Jón and Guðrún took land in the Geysir settlement in 1902 but never lived there, instead were in Hvamm where Jón’s parents lived.
