Jón Guðmundsson was born in Húnavatnssýsla on May 21, 1893.

Jón came to the West in 1903 with his widowed mother, Margrét Guðmundsdóttir. His three sisters had come west before. After staying in Winnipeg for over a year, Margrét decided to move west to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) and took land near Leslie. Jón grew up there and at a young age became very interested in community issues and sat on the school board for 33 years. He was a farmer in the countryside.
