Stefán Guttormsson was born in Vopnafjörður in N. Múlasýsla on May 5, 1877. He died on December 5, 1959. He took the first name Stephan in the west.

Stefán came west in 1893 with his parents, Guttormur Þorsteinsson and María Birgitta Jósefsdóttir. They settled in Húsavík in New Iceland. He was well educated, completing a teacher’s degree in Winnipeg in 1904 and an engineering degree from the University of Manitoba in 1916.
