Steinunn Jóhannesdóttir was born on January 19, 1870 in Borgarfjarðarsýsla. She died on March 14, 1960 in California.

Steinunn came to the West in 1888 and traveled to Winnipeg. She was there for a few years, then moved south to N. Dakota and from there to Chicago. There she enrolled in a missionary school and completed a degree in theology. She worked as an assistant pastor during her studies in Indiana and as a missionary among Chinese immigrants in Oregon. After graduation, she went to California and studied at the University of Southern California, School of Medicine in Los Angeles. From there she graduated in medicine on February 11, 1902 and got married the same day. Her husband had then become a doctor, having graduated from the same school as her the previous year. They went to China together a short time later, where they worked in missions and healing for 42 years. They returned to the United States in 1942.
