Helgi was the son of Kristján Jóhann Helgason and Halldóra Jóhannesdóttir, early settlers in the Foam Lake settlement. Helga’s parents were Guðbrandur Narfason and Anna Margrét Eiríksdóttir in Foam Lake. Helgi grew up in White Sands and Foam Lake. He graduated from the Department of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba in 1914. He was a farmer in Foam Lake and active in community affairs. He was in the local government for 17 years, chairman all those years. He served on the Board of Directors of the Foam Lake Congregation and the United Church of Foam Lake.
