Guðrún Kristjana Kristjánsdóttir was born in White Sand River, Saskatchewan on June 10, 1895. She was known as Rúna Helgason in the west.

Guðrún was the daughter of Kristján Jóhann Helgason and Halldóra Jóhannesdóttir, early settlers in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan in 1897. Guðrún grew up there and was interested in sewing from an early age. She went to Wynyard in 1925 and worked there in a sewing room until 1932. Then went to Foam Lake and lived there. She was in the Icelandic women’s club Sólskin and also the Canadian women’s club The Co-op Guild in Foam Lake.
