Sigurður graduated with an M.A. 1945 and Cand. Phil from the University of Iceland in 1946. He studied at the University of Copenhagen 1946-1951. Mag. scient. in Copenhagen in 1952. He came to the West and received a doctorate in mathematics at Princeton University in 1954. He taught at the school for a while, later was a professor at the University of Chicago. He received many awards and recognitions.
