Ágúst was the son of Sigurður Ingimundarson and Jónína Bernharðsdóttir in Selkirk, Manitoba. He completed elementary and middle school in Selkirk, enrolled in the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, and received his doctorate in dentistry in 1930. He practiced dentistry in Winnipeg after graduation, but then opened a practice in Gimli and was a dentist there for many years. Mekkín was the daughter of Pétur Guðmundsson and Sigríður Þorsteinsdóttir, who came west to Manitoba in 1900.
