Wilhelm Magnússon was born in the Shoal Lake settlement (Grunnavatnsbyggð) in Manitoba on December 23, 1896. He died on March 30, 1979 in Winnipeg. He had the last name Kristjánsson in the west.

Wilhelm was the son of Magnús Kristjánsson and Margrét Dagbjartur Daníelsdóttir in the Shoal Lake settlement and later Lundar. He chose the educational path at a young age, attended the Jón Bjarnason Academy in 1915-16 and completed his BA studies at the University of Manitoba in 1924.
