Valdimar Jakobsson was born in Húnavatnssýsla on April 22, 1887. He died in Calgary, Alberta on July 28, 1976. He was known as Judge Walter J. Lindal in the west.

Spouse: 1) April 20, 1918 Jórunn Magnúsdóttir b. February 9, 1895 in Churchbridge, Saskatchewan, d. November 1, 1941. 2) August 19, 1950 Guðný (Gwen) Sigurbjörg Ólafsdóttir b. October 11, 1895.

Children: 1. Anna Ruth b. June 20, 1925 2. Elizabeth b. May 18, 1929.

Valdimar was just a year old when he came west in 1888 with his mother, Hólmfríður Anna Hannesdóttir, and siblings. His father, Jakob Líndal Hansson, had come west a year earlier.  Valdimar lived in his father’s house in the Þingvalla settlement in Saskatchewan, moved with his parent from there in 1896 to Foxwarren, Manitoba where his father experimented with grain cultivation. At the turn of the century, the Icelanders’ fishing trade in Northern Manitoba was very strong, and the family then moved to Winnipegosis. Valdimar worked at hunting summer and winter. It became clear that hard work like this was bad for his health, and he decided in 1905, only 18 years old, to farm land in the Hólar community south of Leslie, Saskatchewan. He worked on his land in the summer and studied in the winter. He completed a BA at University of Manitoba in Winnipeg in 1911 and a degree in law from the University of Saskatchewan in 1914. See more about studies and jobs in Atvinna (Employment) below. Jórunn was the daughter of Magnús Hinriksson and Kristín Þorsteinsdóttir, who came west to Winnipeg in 1887.
