Jón came to the West in 1903 with his widowed mother, Þuríður Þorsteinsdóttir, and siblings. They settled in Winnipeg where Jón lived until 1946. He then moved west to Vancouver. He was a fisherman on Lake Manitoba. Guðrún came west alone to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1905 and lived there the rest of her life.
