Björn was the son of Pétur Guðmundsson and Ingibjörg Björnsdóttir who came west in 1890. Björn grew up in Gimli, finished high school there and continued his studies in Winnipeg. From there he completed his teacher’s degree and taught in the years 1920-1924. He then returned to school at the Manitoba Agricultural College in 1924-1928. He received his B.S.A. degree at the University of Manitoba in 1928 and then became an M.A.S. 1929 and PhD 1950 from the University of Minnesota. He researched rusts of cereal crops and flax and wrote about plant diseases. Guðný’s parents were Guðmundur Markússon and Ingibjörg Sigríður Finnsdóttir, settlers in the Árnes settlement in New Iceland.
