Kristín was the daughter of Bjarni Marteinsson from Stafafell in Lón and Helga Guðmundsdóttir from Flaga in Breiðdal. Sigurður was the son of Stefán Sigurðsson, a merchant in Hnausa, and Valgerður Jónsdóttir. Sigurður attended school in Hnausa and at a young age started fishing in Lake Winnipeg and later also had a fish store in Riverton. He sat for many years on the local council in Bifröst, then became mayor of Riverton in 1951.
