Sigurður was the son of Bergvin Jónsson and Guðrún Eiríksdóttir, who settled in Minnesota in 1902. Bergvin died in a railroad accident in 1912, so Sigurður Gunnar was sent to his cousin, Sigurður Hólm, in Winnipeg. He moved with his family to the Framnes settlement in 1914, a year when the future awaited him. After finishing elementary school, Sigurður went to work for farmers, later he worked in fishing and worked in the summer building houses. Sigurður and Helga farmed on their own land in the growing settlement where their children were born and grew up.
