Sigurður was the son of Sigfús Bjarnason and Helga Gunnlaugsdóttir who settled in Markland, Nova Scotia in 1879. They moved from there to Pembina County, N. Dakota in 1881. Sigurður grew up and lived there until 1904. He moved to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and settled near Leslie. He worked as a carpenter and then began farming. Florence’s father was Scottish while her mother was Elísabet Hallgrímsdóttir, born in the Garðar settlement in N. Dakota.
