Anna was the daughter of Bjarni Stefánsson and Elín Eiríksdóttir who lived in the Þingvalla settlement in Saskatchewan. Gunnar Gíslason came west in 1883 with his parents, Gísli Jónson and Jarðþrúður Halldórsdóttir, who settled in the Akra settlement. Gunnar grew up there and moved with his parents and brother, Halldór, to Roseau County, Minnesota. He was a farmer for 9 years, then moved in 1904 to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and took land near Elfros.
