Stefán was the son of Rev. Guttormur Guttormsson and Rannveig Gísladóttir in Minneota. Stefán grew up and attended elementary school there. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943-46, then attended St. Olaf Lutheran College in Northfield, Minnesota, graduating in 1949. He studied theology at Northwest Lutheran Seminary from 1949-1952. After graduating, he was ordained a pastor and served a newly formed congregation in Cavalier, N. Dakota. He later became pastor in Bloomington, Minnesota, and then pastor of Holy Trinity Church in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
