John was the son of Stefán Jónasson and his wife Hallgríma Rósa Hóseasdóttir. He grew up in Garðar, attended elementary school there and began to work in commerce at a young age. His interest in commerce led to a move to Portland, Oregon, where he worked for a company related to the grocery trade. Anna was the daughter of Arnljót Ólafsson, who as a child (4 years old) came to the West with her mother, the widow Björg Ólafsdóttir, in 1883. Anna’s mother was Sigurrós Sigurbjarnardóttir.
