Anna was the daughter of Arnljót Ólafssonwho as a child (4 years old) came to the West with his mother, the widow Björg Ólafsdóttir, in 1883. Anna’s mother was Sigurrós Sigurbjarnardóttir. John was the son of Stefán Jónasson and his wife Hallgríma Rósa Hóseasdóttir. He gres up in Garðar, attended elementary school there and began to work in commerce at a young age. His interest in commerce led to a move to Portland, Oregon, where he worked for a company related to the grocery trade.
