Jón Júlíus was the son of Jóhann Vilhjálmur Árnason and Guðrún B Björnsdóttir in Gimli. Lilja was the daughter of Bergþór Einarsson and Kristín Rannveig Björnsdóttir in Winnipeg. Jón attended the Gimli Public School and then the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 1948.
