Valgeir Júlíus Halldórsson was born in the Hnausa settlement in Manitoba on September 21, 1915. He had the last name Thorlakson in the west. He died at Betel in Gimli in 1988.

Valgeir was the son of Halldór Þorláksson and Gróa Sigurðardóttir who came west in 1914 from N. Múlasýsla and settled in the Hnausa settlement. As a young man, Valgeir worked as a fisherman on Lake Winnipeg, then became a fishmonger in Humbug Bay, Manitoba. He worked in mining in Ontario from 1948-1958. He then moved back to Manitoba and lived in Winnipeg. Dora Geraldine was the daughter of Einvarður Breckman and Halldóra Ingibjörg Jónsdóttir in Manitoba.
