Þorsteinn Jónsson was born in Winnipeg on June 28, 1899. He died in Manitoba on January 31, 1961. He was known as Thorsteinn (Stony) Ólafsson in the west.

Þorsteinn was the son of Jón Ólafsson and Sigríður Jónsdóttir who came west to Winnipeg in 1893. Þorsteinn moved with them from there in 1911 to Leslie, Saskatchewan. Vilhelmína was the daughter of Þorvaldur Þorvaldsson from Kelduskógar in S. Múlasýsla and his wife, Gróa Jónsdóttir. Þorsteinn worked in his father’s store in Leslie, but in 1930 he became a grain merchant in the village and worked for Federal Grain Ltd. In 1947 he became the director of the Grass Seed Cleaning Plant. In 1953 he moved to Winnipeg where he was appointed director of the Construction Department and a year later superintendent of the same company in North Battleford. Finally, he also became the company’s superintendent in the area around Regina, Saskatchewan.
