Hallur Engilbert Magnússon was born in Skagafjarðarsýsla on August 17, 1876. He died in Seattle on April 4, 1961.

Hallur and Guðrún came west to Winnipeg with their children in 1904. Hallur worked as a construction worker in the city until 1915, then joined the army but fell ill from poison gas in 1918 in Europe and was discharged from military service. He returned to Winnipeg but moved to Seattle, Washington, in 1924 and lived there thereafter.
