Þorsteinn was the son of Páll Sveingbjörn Jakobsson and Sigríður Guðrún Jensdóttir who came west in 1887 and settled in Manitoba. Sigurveig was the daughter of Gestur Pálsson, brother of Þorsteinn and Anna Hermania Sigurgeirsson in Mikley, Manitoba. Þorsteinn started fishing in Lake Winnipeg as a young man but also worked as a carpenter. In 1946, he moved with his family west to the Pacific Ocean, where they settled in Steveston, near Vancouver. There Þorsteinn got a job in the freezing department of British Columbia Fish Packers Ltd.
