Eggert Sigurgeirsson was born in Eyjafjarðarsýsla on December 9, 1861.
Unmarried and childless
He came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888 with his mother, Ingibjörg Jónsdóttir, and siblings. He stayed in the city for the first year and a half, then went from there to Gimli. In 1892 he settled on land in Mikley in New Iceland and named it Sunnuhvol. He lived there as a family farmer with his mother and siblings.
