Jónas was educated in Iceland, studying at Búnaðarskóli in Hólar and graduating as a teacher in 1909. He taught in various places before coming west to Manitoba in 1913. There he first lived in the Argyle settlement and worked various agricultural jobs but later settled in Mikley. He was a farmer there until 1947, when he moved west to the Pacific Ocean and last lived in Vancouver. Jakobína came to the West in 1888 with her mother, Ingibjörg Jónsdóttir, and siblings. The family settled in Mikley.
