Guðrún came west with her widowed mother, Guðný Vigfúsdóttir, and siblings. Bjarni came west with them to Winnipeg, Manitoba and west directly to the  Þingvalla community in Saskatchewan.  In 1894 they moved to the north side of Lake Manitoba and settled in an area just south of Kinosota. They didn’t like it there and next tried a small island in Lake Manitoba, Bird’s Island, which is not far from the Narrows. They didn’t stay there long because they moved to Big Point in 1897 and immediately started farming. They immediately took an active part in the development of the community and made their contribution. For example, Bjarni was for a long time the treasurer of the Herðubreiðar organization.
