Gísli Jónsson

Vesturfarar

Gísli Jónsson started printing in Winnipeg the same year he arrived there in 1903 and worked there until 1946. He immediately started publishing activities, e.g. he immediately set about setting up a printing press and began publishing a magazine called Heimir. He printed the first five annual volumes, while the magazine was published until 1914. He was responsible for the publication of various Western Icelandic poetry books and wrote introductions to some of them. We can mention Fylgt úr hláð, a poem by Bjarni Þorsteinsson, Kvæðabók by Kristján S. Pálsson. He wrote a preface to Dr. Rögnvald Pétursson’s collection of speeches. There are still numerous articles in Lögberg and Heimskringla, Eimreiðinn, Tímarit, etc. Gísli himself wrote and published Farfuglar in 1919 and Fardagar in 1956. Finally, it can be mentioned that he was responsible for the publication of his wife’s books, Hillingalönd in 1938, Dagshríðarspor; Tólf sögur in 1946. Gísli was very involved in the social activities of Icelanders, sat on the board of the Icelandic national league for many years and was the editor of the association’s magazine from 1940.
