Solveig Sigríður Grímsdóttir received a good preparatory education in the Garðar settlement in N. Dakota and enrolled in a teacher’s course in Valley City in the same State, where she completed her teacher’s degree in 1909. From there she went to Grand Forks, where she completed her B.A. degree from the State University in 1914. She taught in 1909-1911 and 1914 – 1919 but then headed north to Winnipeg where she completed her M.S. degree in medicine in 1922. She was the first woman from the Icelandic colony in N. Dakota to complete a medical degree. She worked as a doctor in the town of Marshall, Minnesota, in that Icelandic settlement, for four years. She took a break and started a family, but resumed practice at the State Hospital in St. Peter in 1953. She was very concerned about the position of women in society and participated in countless projects aimed at improving their welfare and rights. She founded the NBBO Club for Icelandic Girls, Garðar; the Aurora Club, a women’s club in Minneapolis that became part of the Hekla Club; the women’s club of the First Lutheran Church in Marshall, Minn.; the League of Women Voters, New Ulm, Minn.; the College & University Women’s Club, New Ulm; Icelandic Club at the University of N. Dakota; Progress Club & Beans Art Club, Marshall, Minn.; chairman of the Recreation Commission, New Ulm for 20 years; on the library committee there, etc., etc. Then she started writing and both her books and articles were published.
