They emigrated from Iceland to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876. Rannveig and the two older girls found work in the city while Sigfus joined a few friends and fellow Icelanders and went to New Iceland. He established himself in the young colony and was about to return to Winnipeg when the small pox epidemic broke out and he was stuck in the quarantine until the following summer. He came to no harm, returned to Winnipeg to fetch Rannveig and their youngest children. They lived in the Icelandic River Settlement until 1879 when they left for Akra in N. Dakota. From there they moved in 1899 to the Brown District in Manitoba.
